Chlorination
For the purposes of drinking water disinfection, the most common method is chlorination, which is performed by dosing chlorine gas or sodium hypochlorite in aqueous solution.
Other methods of disinfection are:
- irradiation with UV light
- addition of chlorine dioxide
- ozonation – adding ozone
- ultrafiltration
When choosing a disinfection process, the following should be taken into account:
- efficiency
- the possibility of generating unwanted by-products
- whether the method is suitable for water conservation in the water supply system
- whether disinfection alone is sufficient for the treatment of drinking water (see Note 6 to Annex I to the Rules on Drinking Water)
