Zagreb reduced water losses for the first time since 1963

Almost half of the population of the whole of Croatia lives in the city of Zagreb, and here the losses in the water supply network represent almost 35% of the water losses of the whole of Croatia. At the end of 2020, we completed the project of 4-satellite imaging of the water supply system for underground water leak detection.

Zagreb reduced water losses for the first time since 1963

The result of the project is the display of 2317 probable locations of waterworks leaks. We spent 205 working days on field microlocation and found an average of 4.2 leaks per team/day.

Based on the results of our project, the biggest success can be considered the fact that in Zagreb they managed to reverse the trend of increasing water losses or reduce water losses for the first time since 1963.

By reducing losses, we saved 2,200,000 m3 of water in a quarter of a year, or potentially up to 8,800,000 m3 per year. According to the estimated financial effects, ViO Zagreb recouped its investment in the project in the first year already. The project certainly provided an effective platform for tracking and meeting European standards regarding the permitted minimum threshold of 20% of water losses as soon as possible.
